Glenlee – 132KV Civils & Balance of Plant

Glenlee 132/33kV Substation an existing outdoor AIS substation connected to the Glenlee hydroelectric generating station, located immediately adjacent. The substation was scheduled to be extended by SP Energy Networks as part of the Kendoon Tongland Reinforcement (KTR) project.

As part of the overall works package, the scope related to the pre-extension (pre-enabling) work including both Balance of Plant and Civils elements of works which was carried out in a staged basis in line with scheduled outages.

The project consisted of the demolition of the existing circuit and the new primary plant installed with associated civil works (new bases cast)

As the 132kV compound would remain live and in-service during the construction works so we had to ensure that the operational security of the site is not compromised.

Also, part of the scope of the project included the secure removal of asbestos floor tiles from the control building.

Scope of Works

Supply and install gates along the front (north-east) elevation of the site in place of removable panels.
Supply and install new temporary gate for the construction phase.
Supply and installation of safety barriers in proximity to Tower BG102 and along the top of all other batters within the substation.
Supply and install cable ducts for new 132kV cable route within the operational substation boundary
Supply and install foundations for the new 132kV switchgear for the diverted Newton Stewart/Glenluce CCt2, as well as the plinth for new stand-by diesel generator
Diversion of the existing substation palisade fencing.
Diversion of existing fibre optic cable from Tower BG102 into the control building to accommodate the new diverted circuit, including terminations and subsequent testing and commissioning.
Demolition and removal of existing electrical plant along with associated infrastructure including foundations multicore and fibre optic cables, ducting and fencing
Supply and install steel support structures for the new 132kV switchgear
Install new post-insulators and 132kV main plant equipment for the diverted Newton Stewart/Glenluce CCt2
Supply and install busbar to the diverted Newton Stewart/Glenluce CCt2
Removal of the existing Newton Stewart/Glenluce CCt2 including the removal of the 132kV oil-filled cable

Balance of Plant Equipment Supplied by NRS:

132kV conductors, tubular busbars and conductor clamps
Steel structures for supporting all new equipment
Mechanical & electrical interlocking
Above ground earth tape and materials for bonding all equipment, structures, cable metallic containment, etc. to the substation earth mat
High frequency earthing for all new surge arresters and CVTs
LVAC & DC power cables, multi-core & multi-pair cables and all associated terminations
VT Fuse boxes and ancillary equipment
Cable trays, containment systems, cables support and fixings
Cable ducting sealing system
Removal and replacement of down dropper connection between ‘R’ phase post insulator and tower.
Plant and equipment labelling

Protection & Control

132kV Interface and commissioning of voltage transformers, current transformers and line earth switch 301A for Newton Stewart/Glenluce 2 feeder.
Undertake necessary modifications to the Mesh Corner 3 Protection.
Undertake protection setting changes for Newton Stewart/Glenluce 2 feeder
Supply and installation of 301A control and electrical Interlock.
Undertake necessary modifications to the existing SCADA provision. This included supply and installation of cables between primary plant and secondary equipment and SCIS cable termination cubicle (SCIS CTC).
Preparation of all interface drawings

Testing and commissioning of all of the above to relevant codes and standards
